Use of essay-writing services

In the last 24 hours, some staff and students have again received an unsolicited "spam" email encouraging them to visit the website of an essay-writing service.

Students are reminded that University Regulation XVIII (at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/governance/regulations/18/current/) makes it an offence of academic misconduct for students to submit, as their own, work which they are not responsible for authoring - this includes submitting work purchased from an essay-writing service. Offences of this nature are defined as "Major", and considered by the University's Academic Misconduct Committee, which is empowered to impose a range of penalties up to and including recommending to Senate the immediate termination of a student's registration.

Further information on academic misconduct and the avoidance of plagiarism is available at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/students/welcome/handbook/examsandassessment/.
